Floaters in the Eye: What They Mean and What to Do Next

Floaters in the eye are moving spots, threads, rings or shadow-like shapes that seem to drift through your vision. They usually come from tiny strands or clumps within the clear vitreous gel inside the eye. What you see is the shadow these structures create on the retina.

Many floaters are linked to ordinary changes in the vitreous and do not require treatment. The important question is not simply whether a floater exists—it is whether it is familiar and stable or has appeared suddenly with other visual changes.

The short answer: A long-standing floater that has already been examined is often monitored. A first-time or changing floater should be checked promptly. A sudden burst of floaters, flashes of light, blurred vision or a curtain-like shadow requires urgent, same-day eye care.

What are floaters in the eye?

The vitreous is a transparent, gel-like material filling the space between the lens and retina. It helps the eye maintain its shape, but its texture can change over time. Fine collagen fibres may gather together, or cells may enter the vitreous. These structures interrupt the path of light and cast shadows on the retina—the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

That is why floaters seem to be in the world in front of you even though they originate inside the eye. They are usually most noticeable when the shadow has strong contrast against whatever you are looking at.

What do eye floaters look like?

There is no single floater shape. People commonly describe:

  • one isolated dot or several small dots;
  • short threads, commas or hair-like marks;
  • a curved line, ring or broken circle;
  • a loose web or translucent cloud;
  • a dark speck that moves away when you try to look at it; or
  • a sudden group of soot-like or pepper-like particles.

A floater may look grey, black or almost transparent. Its appearance alone cannot confirm its cause. Timing, change and accompanying symptoms provide more useful clues for deciding how quickly it needs assessment.

Why do floaters move when your eyes move?

Floaters are suspended within the vitreous rather than fixed to the centre of your vision. When your eyes move, the gel and the structures inside it also shift. The floater may lag slightly behind the eye movement, continue drifting after your eyes stop, or appear to escape when you try to look directly at it.

This movement is characteristic of many vitreous floaters, but it does not establish whether a new floater is safe. A new moving mark still deserves an eye examination.

Why are floaters easier to see at certain times?

Floaters often stand out against large, evenly lit surfaces. The floater may not have become larger or more numerous; the background can simply make its shadow easier to detect.

Digital displays can create a similar effect, especially when a mostly white page fills the screen. The screen itself does not necessarily create the floater, but its uniform brightness can reveal one that was already present. What causes floaters in the eye?

Changes in the vitreous

The most common explanation is a change in the texture of the vitreous. As the gel becomes more liquid, its fine fibres can gather into visible strands or clumps. This becomes more frequent with age, although floaters can occur in younger adults as well.

Posterior vitreous detachment

A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) occurs when the vitreous separates from the retina. It may cause a noticeable new floater, a ring-shaped floater or flashes of light. PVD often occurs without a serious complication, but the vitreous can occasionally pull on the retina strongly enough to produce a tear.

Other causes that require assessment

Less commonly, floaters can come from inflammation, bleeding, pigment or other material inside the eye. A retinal tear or detachment can also produce new floaters. It is not possible to distinguish these causes reliably at home, which is why the pattern and timing of the symptoms matter.

Are floaters in the eye dangerous?

Most established floaters are not a threat to vision. However, “most are harmless” should never be used to dismiss a sudden change. A retinal tear can sometimes allow fluid to pass underneath the retina and lead to a retinal detachment. Prompt examination can identify problems before they progress.

The floater’s darkness or shape is not a dependable safety test. A better approach is to compare what you are experiencing with the three patterns below.

Warning signs that need urgent eye care

Arrange urgent assessment if you experience:

  • a sudden appearance of many new floaters;
  • a rapid increase in your usual floaters;
  • new floaters together with flashes of light;
  • a dark curtain, veil or shadow moving across your vision;
  • new blurred vision or missing side vision;
  • floaters after eye trauma or eye surgery; or
  • eye pain with a change in vision.

How are eye floaters checked?

An optometrist or ophthalmologist will ask when the floater began, whether it changed suddenly, whether one or both eyes are affected and whether you have flashes or missing vision. They may use dilating drops to obtain a clearer view of the vitreous and retina.

The examination is important because the visible symptom may look similar even when the underlying causes differ. If the retina cannot be viewed clearly, additional testing may sometimes be required.

Do eye floaters go away?

Some floaters become less intrusive over weeks or months. They may shift away from the central line of sight, become less sharply defined or receive less attention as the brain adapts. Others remain visible for a long time.

When a floater is persistent and seriously disrupts vision, an ophthalmologist may discuss specialist procedures such as laser treatment or vitrectomy. These are not casual fixes and can carry risks, so suitability must be assessed individually. Many people are instead advised to monitor stable floaters.

Can glasses make floaters less distracting?

Glasses cannot remove material from the vitreous or treat a retinal condition. Tinted or polarised sunglasses may, however, improve comfort outdoors by reducing harsh brightness and reflected glare. Frequently asked questions

Can floaters appear in only one eye?

Yes. The vitreous in each eye changes independently, so a floater may be present in one eye before the other. New symptoms in either eye should be assessed based on their timing and accompanying signs.

Can stress cause eye floaters?

Stress can make a person more alert to visual sensations, but it should not be assumed to explain a genuinely new floater. If the symptom is new or changing, arrange an eye examination rather than attributing it to stress.

Does dehydration cause floaters?

Dehydration is not considered a typical direct cause of vitreous floaters. Drinking water is important for general health, but it should not be used as a treatment for new floaters or as a reason to delay assessment.

Can you prevent floaters?

Ordinary age-related vitreous changes cannot always be prevented. Protecting your eyes from injury, attending recommended eye examinations and seeking prompt help for sudden symptoms are more practical steps.

Why can I see a floater but nobody else can?

The floater is inside your eye and produces an image on your own retina. It is not an object floating in the room, so another person cannot see it by looking where you are looking.
