Why Do Young People Get PVD?

Posterior vitreous detachment, often shortened to PVD, is usually thought of as an age-related eye condition. It happens when the vitreous gel inside the eye begins to separate from the retina.

For many people, PVD is associated with getting older. But younger adults can experience it too — especially if they are short-sighted, have had eye trauma, previous eye surgery, or naturally develop vitreous changes earlier than average.

If you’re young and dealing with sudden floaters, flashes, or changes in vision, it can feel confusing and worrying. What Is PVD?

Posterior vitreous detachment happens when the vitreous, the clear gel-like substance inside your eye, pulls away from the retina at the back of the eye.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains that PVD occurs when the vitreous separates from the retina as the vitreous changes over time. It is common with age, but certain factors can make it happen earlier.  

The most common symptoms include:

  • new floaters
  • cobweb-like shapes
  • dark spots or strands
  • flashes of light
  • visual disturbances that move when your eyes move

Cleveland Clinic notes that PVD is rare in people younger than 40 and more commonly occurs after age 50, but risk increases with factors such as nearsightedness, eye injury, or previous eye surgery.  


Why Do Young People Get PVD?

Although PVD is more common later in life, it can happen earlier. The main reasons include:

1. High Myopia / Short-Sightedness

One of the biggest reasons younger people develop PVD is myopia, especially moderate to high myopia.

Short-sighted eyes are often longer in shape, which can place more mechanical stress on the vitreous and retina. Ophthalmology guidance notes that PVD can happen earlier in people with myopia or after trauma or eye surgery.  

This is why younger adults with high myopia may notice floaters earlier than people with normal vision.

2. Eye Trauma

3. Previous Eye Surgery

Certain eye procedures can increase the chance of vitreous changes occurring earlier.

This may include cataract surgery, retinal procedures, or other intraocular surgery. PVD can sometimes be precipitated by ophthalmic surgical procedures.  

If you have had eye surgery and then notice new floaters or flashes, it is important to get examined.


4. Natural Vitreous Changes

Some people simply experience vitreous changes earlier than others.

The vitreous is not completely solid. Over time, it can become more liquid and develop clumps or strands. These clumps can cast shadows on the retina, appearing as floaters.

This does not always mean something dangerous is happening, but new symptoms should always be assessed.


5. Retinal Risk Factors

Young people with lattice degeneration, high myopia, family history of retinal detachment, or previous eye trauma may have a higher risk of retinal problems.

PVD itself is often harmless, but the concern is whether the vitreous pulls hard enough to cause a retinal tear.

Mayo Clinic describes retinal detachment as an emergency situation, and symptoms can include flashes and floaters.  


Are Floaters Normal in Young People?

Floaters can happen at any age, but they are more common as people get older.

In young people, floaters are often linked with:

  • myopia
  • early vitreous changes
  • eye inflammation
  • trauma
  • PVD
  • retinal changes

Mild, stable floaters are often not dangerous. But new, sudden, or worsening floaters should be checked, especially if they come with flashes of light, a dark curtain/shadow, or vision loss.


When Should You Get Floaters Checked?

You should seek urgent eye care if you notice:

  • sudden new floaters
  • flashes of light
  • a curtain or shadow over vision
  • sudden blurred vision
  • loss of side vision
  • floaters after trauma
  • many new dots or cobwebs at once

These symptoms can sometimes indicate a retinal tear or retinal detachment, which needs prompt medical attention.
