Black Eye Floaters: Why They Look Dark and When to Get Help
“Black eye floaters” usually means dark dots, threads or shapes moving through your vision—not bruising around the eye. They can look as if they are in front of you, but most originate inside the eye. What you notice is often a shadow falling on the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye.
A familiar floater that has stayed unchanged may have a common vitreous cause. However, colour alone cannot tell you whether a floater is harmless. A new black floater—or a sudden shower of black specks—deserves prompt attention, especially if it appears with flashes, blurred vision or a curtain-like shadow.
Quick answer: Eye floaters often look black or grey because small strands, clumps or cells inside the vitreous interfere with light and create shadows on the retina. They are not necessarily made of black material. A sudden increase in dark floaters can sometimes signal bleeding or a retinal tear and should be assessed urgently.
Why do eye floaters look black?
The space between the lens and retina is filled with a clear, gel-like substance called the vitreous. Tiny fibres and cells can collect within this gel. As light passes through the eye, these structures can cast shadows on the retina.
Your brain interprets those shadows as spots, strands or moving shapes in your field of vision. This is why a floater may appear charcoal, grey or black even though it is not a solid black object. The effect is similar to seeing a small shadow rather than seeing the structure itself.
Floaters are often easier to detect against a bright, even background, such as a pale wall, an overcast sky or a white computer page. The background creates more contrast with the shadow, so an existing floater may become obvious without having physically changed. What can a black floater look like?
People use the word “black” for several different visual effects. A dark floater might resemble:
- a single round dot or small spot;
- a comma, short thread or hair-like line;
- a broken ring or curved strand;
- a loose web or translucent cloud;
- several soot-like or pepper-like specks; or
- a shape that drifts when the eyes move, then continues moving briefly after the eyes stop.
The shape can offer a useful description for your optometrist or ophthalmologist, but it is not a diagnosis. A small dark dot can have a routine explanation, while a cluster of dots appearing suddenly can have a very different significance.
Why is one floater darker than another?
Not all floaters block light in the same way. How dark or sharply defined one appears may be affected by:
- Its density: a thicker clump can create a stronger shadow than a fine, translucent strand.
- Its position inside the eye: the location of the material relative to the retina can change how distinct its shadow looks.
- The background: a floater usually has more contrast against a large, bright surface than against a detailed or dim scene.
- What the floater contains: collagen, inflammatory cells, pigment or blood can produce different appearances.
This means a darker appearance is not, by itself, proof that a floater is dangerous. It also means you should not try to identify the cause from colour alone.
Common reasons for dark eye floaters
Changes within the vitreous
Over time, the vitreous can become more liquid and its fine collagen fibres can clump together. The shadows from these clumps are a common source of floaters. Although this becomes more frequent with age, younger adults can also notice floaters.
Posterior vitreous detachment
A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) happens when the vitreous separates from the retina. It can create new floaters, and some people notice a ring or larger moving shape. PVD is common and often occurs without a lasting complication, but a new PVD can occasionally pull hard enough to tear the retina. Blood, inflammation or pigment inside the eye
Dark dots can sometimes come from blood cells, inflammatory material or pigment released inside the eye. A retinal tear may allow blood or pigment to enter the vitreous, creating many small spots. Eye inflammation, injury and some retinal or blood-vessel conditions can also cause floaters.
These possibilities cannot be separated reliably by looking at the floater yourself. An eye-care professional may need to dilate the pupil and examine the retina to find the cause.
Is one black floater normal?
One long-standing floater that has already been assessed and remains stable is often managed by observation. Many people gradually become less conscious of it as the floater shifts or the brain adapts to its presence.
A new single floater is different from a familiar one. It may still have a common explanation, but first-time or suddenly changed symptoms should be checked. The safest decision depends on when it began, whether it is increasing, whether flashes are present and what an examination shows—not simply whether the spot looks black.
A sudden shower of black dots is different
A rapid appearance of many dark dots is sometimes described as pepper, soot, a swarm or a shower in the vision. This can occur when blood or pigment cells enter the vitreous after a retinal tear. It may happen with light flashes or a dark area spreading across the side of the vision, although not every person experiences every symptom.
Seek urgent, same-day eye care if you notice:
- many new floaters appearing suddenly;
- a sudden increase or change in your usual floaters;
- flashes of light, particularly with new floaters;
- a curtain, veil or shadow crossing any part of your vision;
- new blurred vision or loss of side vision;
- floaters following an eye injury or eye surgery; or
- eye pain accompanying the visual change.
Contact an optometrist or ophthalmologist who can assess urgent retinal symptoms. If prompt eye care is not available, attend an emergency department. Retinal problems can be painless, so waiting for pain is not a safe test.

Can a black floater be blood?
Yes, blood cells within the vitreous can appear as dark spots, but ordinary collagen-related floaters can also look dark. You cannot confirm the difference at home. Sudden black dots, reduced vision or associated flashes need an urgent retinal examination.
Why does a black floater move when I move my eyes?
Floaters are suspended in the vitreous, so they move as the gel moves. They may lag slightly behind your eye movement and drift away when you try to look directly at them.
Will a black floater disappear?
Some floaters become less noticeable over weeks or months because they move away from the central line of sight or the brain learns to filter them out. Others persist. Any decision about treatment should follow an examination and a discussion of the likely benefits and risks with an eye specialist.
