Do Sunglasses Expire? How to Tell If UV Protection Still Works
Sunglasses have no universal expiry date. Learn what can damage lenses, which warning signs justify replacement and how to verify UV protection properly.
Sunglasses do not come with one reliable expiry date. A well-made, undamaged pair may remain useful for years, while heat, heavy wear, damaged coatings or unknown product quality can create reasons to replace a pair much sooner. The important question is not simply “How old are they?” but “Are the lenses still clear, intact and measurably protecting as claimed?”
Sunglasses do not automatically expire after one, two or five years. Time alone cannot confirm whether UV protection still works. Replace lenses that are deeply scratched, crazed, peeling, cloudy or distorted. There is no universal best-before date for sunglasses. Current Australian requirements focus on how sunglasses are designed, tested and labelled when supplied; they do not tell every owner to discard every pair after a fixed number of months or years.
That is because “sunglasses” covers many different constructions. UV-absorbing ingredients can be incorporated into a lens material, applied through a treatment or used alongside other coatings. Lens material, manufacturing quality, exposure, cleaning, storage and physical damage all affect how a particular pair ages. Two pairs bought on the same day may therefore reach very different conditions after several summers.
Age is not a test
An old pair is not automatically unsafe, and a new-looking pair is not automatically compliant. The date gives context, not a measurement.
Construction matters
Different lens materials and treatments can block UV in different ways, so there is no single wear pattern that applies to every product.
Condition matters
Scratches, coating failure, haze, warping and poor fit can make a pair unpleasant or unsuitable even before UV performance is considered.

Can UV protection wear off sunglasses?

Other coatings—such as anti-reflective, mirror, scratch-resistant or oleophobic treatments—also have their own wear patterns and should not be confused automatically with the UV filter.
It is therefore safer to avoid both extremes: do not assume UV protection vanishes merely because a birthday has passed, but do not assume a battered or unknown pair remains protective forever. Inspect what you can see and test what you cannot.

A dark tint can reduce visible brightness without proving how much invisible ultraviolet radiation is blocked. Polarisation reduces reflected glare; it is also not proof of UV protection. How to tell when sunglasses should be replaced
Visible wear cannot always tell you the precise UV transmittance, but it can reveal that a pair is no longer giving a clear, stable view. Damage across the visual area, coating breakdown and distortion are sensible replacement triggers even without proving that UV performance has changed.

Do not try to “repair” a scratched lens with toothpaste, baking soda, abrasive polish or harsh solvent. These methods can change the surface, damage coatings and create more optical distortion. If a scratch is in your line of sight, professional lens replacement is the safer fix.
How can you tell if UV protection still works?
The dependable answer comes from measuring how much ultraviolet radiation passes through the lens. Formal standards use spectrophotometric methods across relevant wavelengths; a calibrated UV–visible spectrophotometer provides far more meaningful information than simply looking through the lens.
A practical four-step check
- Find the original specification. Check the product page, packaging or label for the stated UVA/UVB protection, UV400 claim, Australian/New Zealand standard reference and lens category.
- Inspect both lenses carefully. Clean them with water and a clean microfibre cloth, then look for deep scratches, haze, peeling, crazing, chips or warping.
- Ask an optical professional about testing. Some optometrists and optical retailers have a UV lens meter or related instrument. Ask what wavelengths the device measures and whether the result is a screening reading or a fuller transmittance assessment.
- Replace unresolved uncertainty. If the pair has unknown origins, cannot be tested and will be your main sun protection, a clearly specified new pair is the simpler decision.
Are home UV-card or banknote tests accurate?
Online demonstrations often place a UV-sensitive card, bead or fluorescent banknote feature behind a lens and shine a small UV torch at it. The result may show that the lens reduces some output from that particular torch. It does not confirm performance across the complete UVA and UVB ranges, identify the torch wavelength accurately or establish compliance with a sunglass standard.
Phone-camera tricks and comparing how dark two lenses look are even less useful. Cameras process exposure automatically, while visible tint and ultraviolet transmittance are different properties. Treat a home test as a demonstration—not a safety certificate.
How long should a good pair of sunglasses last?
A well-cared-for pair can remain wearable for years, but there is no responsible one-number answer. Daily work sunglasses exposed to salt, sand, sweat and hot vehicles face a different life from an occasional pair stored in a hard case. Replace based on condition, clarity, fit and confidence in the specification rather than an invented countdown.
A useful habit is to inspect your sunglasses at the start of each high-UV season and after any major incident—such as being crushed in a bag, left on a hot dashboard, dropped onto a rough surface or exposed to a chemical cleaner. If the pair is important for daily driving, water, sport or light sensitivity, do not wait for severe damage before addressing it.
How to make sunglasses last longer
Use a hard case
A microfibre pouch helps with dust, but a rigid case gives better protection against pressure, keys and rough surfaces inside a bag.
Rinse grit before wiping
Sand, road dust and dried salt can scratch when dragged across a lens. Rinse with clean lukewarm water first, then dry gently.
Use suitable cleaner
Use a clean microfibre cloth and a cleaner approved for coated eyewear. Avoid household glass cleaner, acetone and unknown solvents.
Avoid extreme heat
Do not leave sunglasses on a car dashboard or other very hot surface. Heat can deform frames and contribute to coating or lens damage.
Use both hands
Removing glasses with one hand repeatedly can twist the frame and loosen hinges, reducing alignment and coverage over time.
Store lenses facing up
Do not place lenses directly on a table, push them onto your head or leave them unsecured where they can slide and scratch.
What UV labels should Australians check?
Australia’s mandatory consumer product standard for sunglasses is based on AS/NZS 1067.1:2016. Required consumer information includes the manufacturer or supplier identification, lens category, a description of the category and relevant usage warnings. The regulated ultraviolet range runs from 280 to 400 nanometres.
Lens category mainly describes visible-light transmission and suitability for conditions; it is not a simple quality score. Categories 0 and 1 provide limited or very limited sunglare reduction and are treated as fashion spectacles. Categories 2 and 3 are common sunglass categories for medium to high sunglare reduction. Category 4 is very dark, special-purpose eyewear and is not suitable for driving.

Do sunglasses expire after two years?
No universal rule says every pair expires after two years. Lens construction, exposure, damage, storage and original quality vary too much for one calendar deadline. Inspect the pair and arrange optical testing if its UV performance is uncertain.
Does UV400 protection wear off over time?
UV performance can change in some lenses after ageing, exposure or damage, but it does not disappear on one predictable date. UV400 is a performance claim, not a lifespan guarantee. Proper transmittance testing is the way to check an uncertain older pair.
Can I test sunglasses for UV protection at home?
