Solar Eclipse Eye Damage: Can It Cause Floaters or PVD?
A solar eclipse is unforgettable, but looking directly at it without the correct protection can cause serious and potentially permanent eye damage. The injury is called solar retinopathy: intense sunlight is focused onto the retina, particularly the macula responsible for detailed central vision.
With the next total solar eclipse crossing Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain and a small part of Portugal on 12 August 2026—and a partial eclipse visible across many other parts of the Northern Hemisphere—questions about eclipse-related eye damage are rising again.
Important safety warning: Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing a solar eclipse. This includes very dark, polarised and UV-protective sunglasses, including Vynix. Direct eclipse viewing requires a safe solar viewer that complies with the ISO 12312-2 standard, or an approved indirect method such as pinhole projection.

What happens when you look at a solar eclipse?
An eclipse does not make the visible part of the Sun safe. The danger is that the darker sky and unusual appearance can tempt people to stare for longer than they normally would. Concentrated solar radiation can then injure light-sensitive retinal tissue without producing an immediate pain response.
Australia’s radiation-protection authority, ARPANSA, warns that the damage can occur rapidly, vision loss may not be immediately apparent and there is no treatment guaranteed to restore vision that has been lost. Some people improve over time, while others can be left with persistent distortion or a central blind spot.
The main injury associated with looking at an eclipse is solar retinopathy, not sunburn on the front of the eye. It affects the retina at the back of the eye, especially the macula used for reading, recognising faces and seeing fine detail.
Symptoms of solar eclipse eye damage
Symptoms may not be obvious immediately after exposure. They can affect one or both eyes and may include:
- blurred or reduced central vision;
- a dark, grey or empty spot near the centre of vision;
- straight lines appearing bent, wavy or distorted;
- changes in colour perception;
- increased sensitivity to light; or
- headache or eye discomfort after viewing.
A person may describe the dark area as a “spot” and assume it is an eye floater. However, a retinal blind spot and a vitreous floater usually behave differently.
Can a solar eclipse cause eye floaters?
Eye floaters are not the typical result of solar eclipse exposure. True floaters are mobile shadows created by material within the vitreous gel that fills the eye. They often look like dots, threads, cobwebs or rings and tend to drift when the eyes move.
Solar retinopathy damages the retina rather than creating material inside the vitreous. Its dark or blurred area is more likely to remain in the same part of the visual field—often near the centre—rather than floating freely across the scene.
Someone may still notice existing floaters after an eclipse because they are paying unusually close attention to their vision or repeatedly testing each eye against a bright wall or sky. That does not prove the eclipse created those floaters. It is also possible to confuse an after-image or central retinal spot with a floater.
Because people cannot reliably diagnose the difference themselves, any new visual symptom after looking at the Sun should be assessed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Can looking at a solar eclipse cause PVD?
There is no established evidence that viewing a solar eclipse directly causes posterior vitreous detachment. PVD occurs when the vitreous gel separates from the retina. The American Society of Retina Specialists describes it as a natural adult change that becomes more common with age. Additional risk factors include nearsightedness, trauma and recent eye surgery.
The two conditions involve different structures:

An eclipse injury therefore should not be marketed or described as a known cause of PVD. However, the appearance of new floaters or flashes still matters. A sudden PVD can occasionally cause a retinal tear, and the timing may be coincidental rather than caused by the eclipse.
When should you seek urgent eye care?
Arrange prompt professional assessment if you looked at an eclipse or directly at the Sun and then notice central blur, a dark spot, distorted lines, altered colours or unusual light sensitivity.
Seek urgent same-day eye care for:
- a sudden shower or major increase in eye floaters;
- new flashes of light;
- a curtain, veil or shadow moving across the vision;
- sudden loss of peripheral vision; or
- a rapid decrease in vision.
These warning signs can occur with a retinal tear or retinal detachment and should not be treated as ordinary light sensitivity. Sunglasses cannot diagnose, prevent or treat these emergencies.
Why ordinary sunglasses are not safe for eclipse viewing
A common and dangerous assumption is that very dark sunglasses are sufficient. They are not. NASA states that regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are unsafe for looking at the Sun. Certified solar viewers are thousands of times darker and are designed specifically for direct solar observation.
This distinction applies to every normal sunglass brand:
- polarisation does not make sunglasses safe for direct Sun viewing;
- 100% UVA/UVB protection does not make them eclipse glasses;
- stacking multiple sunglasses together is not safe;
- smoked glass, camera film and improvised filters are not safe; and
- looking through a camera, telescope or binoculars requires a specialised solar filter attached to the front of the optical device.

How to view a solar eclipse safely
Use compliant eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer
Choose a viewer that complies with the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Inspect it before use and discard it if it is scratched, punctured, torn or separating from its frame. Put the viewer on before turning toward the Sun, then turn away again before removing it.
Use eclipse protection throughout every partial phase
During partial and annular eclipses, there is no safe period for direct viewing without specialised protection. During a total eclipse, direct viewing without a solar filter is only considered safe during the brief phase of complete totality when the Sun’s bright face is entirely covered. Eclipse glasses must go back on as soon as any bright sunlight reappears.
Try indirect viewing
A pinhole projector lets you watch an image of the eclipse on another surface while keeping your back to the Sun. NASA and ARPANSA describe indirect projection as a safe alternative for people who do not have a compliant solar viewer. Never look through the pinhole itself.
Be especially careful with children and optical equipment
Children require close supervision. Eclipse glasses also must not be combined with binoculars, cameras or telescopes unless the optical equipment has its own correctly fitted front-mounted solar filter and expert instructions are followed.

Frequently asked questions
Can one quick look at an eclipse damage the eyes?
Potentially, yes. The precise risk depends on factors including exposure time and viewing conditions, but there is no reliably safe “quick glance” at the visible Sun. Retinal injury can occur without immediate pain, so absence of pain does not confirm that the eyes are unharmed.
Are polarised sunglasses safe for a solar eclipse?
No. Polarisation reduces reflected glare from surfaces; it is not a solar-observation filter. Even extremely dark polarised sunglasses do not replace ISO 12312-2-compliant eclipse glasses.
Can solar retinopathy look like a floater?
It can be described as a dark spot, but it usually behaves differently. A solar-retinopathy spot is often central and relatively fixed in the visual field, while a vitreous floater tends to drift as the eye moves. Only a professional eye examination can determine the cause of a new symptom.
Can a solar eclipse cause retinal detachment?
The established direct injury is solar retinopathy, which damages retinal tissue through intense light exposure. Retinal detachment is a different condition and is not the usual consequence of eclipse viewing. Nevertheless, sudden floaters, flashes or a curtain-like shadow require urgent assessment for a retinal tear or detachment regardless of when they begin.
