UV400 vs Polarised Sunglasses: What’s the Difference?

UV400 and polarisation solve different problems. Learn what each lens feature does, why dark tint is separate and what to check before buying sunglasses.

UV400 and polarisation are often printed beside each other on sunglass descriptions, but they are not the same feature. UV400 refers to protection from ultraviolet radiation. Polarisation reduces reflected glare from surfaces such as roads, water, snow and glass.

Quick answer

UV400 protects your eyes from ultraviolet wavelengths up to 400 nanometres, covering UVA and UVB. Polarised lenses reduce reflected visible glare. A pair can have one feature without the other, so for well-rounded outdoor sunglasses, look for clearly stated UV protection and polarisation together.

What does UV400 mean on sunglasses?

UV400 means the lens is designed to filter ultraviolet wavelengths up to 400 nanometres. That range covers both UVA and UVB radiation, which is why UV400 is one of the most useful labels to look for when buying sunglasses for outdoor wear.

The US Food and Drug Administration recommends sunglasses labelled UV400 or 100% UV protection. In Australia and New Zealand, eyewear can also be labelled according to the applicable sunglass standard and lens category. The practical buying rule is simple: do not judge UV protection by how dark a lens looks—check the stated specification.

UV400 is about protection

It describes the ultraviolet wavelengths the lens is designed to filter, rather than the colour or darkness you see.

It does not mean polarised

A UV400 lens can protect against UV without containing the directional filter used to reduce reflected glare.

What do polarised sunglasses do?

Sunlight travels in many directions. When it reflects from a broad, flat surface, much of it becomes horizontally oriented. This creates the intense sheet of glare you may notice on a wet road, car bonnet, open water, snow, glass or pale pavement.

A polarising filter is designed to reduce much of that horizontally reflected light. This can create a calmer, clearer view and reduce the need to squint in bright, reflective conditions.

Polarisation is therefore mainly about glare control and visual comfort. It is not proof of UV protection. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends checking UV coverage separately, even when a lens is polarised.

The best answer is often both

UV400 and polarisation are not competing technologies. One addresses ultraviolet exposure and the other addresses reflected glare. If you spend time outdoors around bright roads, water, glass or snow, a lens combining both features is usually the more complete choice.

Are darker sunglasses more UV protective?

No. Lens darkness controls how much visible light passes through the lens. UV protection describes how the lens filters ultraviolet radiation. They are different measurements.

A deep tint can make intense sunlight feel more comfortable, but appearance alone cannot confirm UV protection. A clear lens can have UV400 protection, while a dark-looking fashion lens may have an unclear specification. Always read the product details rather than relying on colour.

  1. Confirm UV protection first. Look for UV400 or a clear UVA/UVB protection statement.
  2. Check whether the lens is polarised. Do not assume this from tint colour or price.
  3. Choose a suitable tint. Darker is not automatically safer; it simply reduces more visible brightness.
  4. Check screen visibility. Some LCD dashboards and phones can look dim or show colours through polarised lenses at certain angles.
  5. Compare frame measurements. Lens width, bridge width, temple length, weight and material vary between styles.
  6. Buy for repeat wear. Protection only helps when the frame is comfortable enough to wear consistently outdoors.

Is UV400 the same as polarised?

Why can a phone screen look strange through polarised lenses?

Many LCD screens contain their own polarising layer. When the screen and sunglass filters meet at certain angles, the display can look dim, patchy or rainbow-coloured. Rotating the device or changing your viewing angle can change the effect.

Are UV400 sunglasses safe for viewing a solar eclipse?
