Blue-Sky Dots or Eye Floaters? How to Tell the Difference
Bright dots that dart quickly across a clear blue sky are often the blue-field entoptic phenomenon. Darker specks, threads or cobweb-like shapes that drift and lag behind your eye movement are more typical of eye floaters.
They can appear in the same setting, but they come from different parts of the eye. This guide explains the clues that can help you describe what you see. It cannot diagnose the cause of a visual symptom, so new or suddenly changing symptoms still need professional assessment.
A cloudless sky can reveal details in our own visual system that normally disappear into a busy background. Two of the most commonly confused are blue-sky dots and eye floaters. Bright, tiny and fast
Usually seen as many pinpoint lights or short bright streaks that dart along small, curved paths while you look at a bright blue field.
Darker, varied and drifting
Often seen as grey or translucent dots, rings, threads or cobweb-like forms that move when your eyes move, then appear to settle.
What are the bright moving dots in a blue sky?
The scientific name is the blue-field entoptic phenomenon, sometimes called Scheerer’s phenomenon. “Entoptic” means that the visual effect comes from within the eye itself.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains that the moving points are linked to white blood cells travelling through tiny blood vessels in front of the retina. Blue light is absorbed differently where these cells pass, allowing the moving pattern to become visible. Laboratory research has likewise identified leukocytes—white blood cells—as the source of the phenomenon.
You are most likely to notice it while looking at a clear blue sky, a bright pale surface or an evenly illuminated blue screen. The dots tend to be:
- brighter than the background, rather than grey or black;
- very small and numerous;
- quick-moving, often along short curved or squiggling paths; and
- most obvious against blue light, rather than equally visible in every setting.
Useful clue: if the points keep darting when your gaze is steady, and each one appears only briefly before another follows, that pattern is more consistent with the blue-field entoptic phenomenon than a conventional floater.
What are eye floaters?
Eye floaters are shapes that appear to move across your vision even though nothing is present in the scene around you. The eye is filled with a clear, gel-like substance called the vitreous. Fibres, cells or clumps within that gel can cast shadows on the light-sensitive retina, and those shadows are perceived as floaters.
The US National Eye Institute describes floaters as dark spots or squiggly lines. They may also resemble a ring, hair, thread or cobweb. Because the material is suspended in the vitreous, the shape commonly moves as the eye moves and then drifts after the eye stops.
Floaters can be easiest to see against:
- a bright blue or overcast sky;
- a white wall, sheet of paper or computer screen;
- snow, pale pavement or other evenly bright surfaces; and
- strong daylight with few background details.
That shared “bright sky” setting is why people often confuse floaters with blue-field dots. The background reveals both phenomena, but it does not mean they have the same cause.

This comparison is a description aid, not a home diagnostic test. More than one visual effect can occur at the same time, and symptoms that sound similar can have different causes. Why does a bright sky make both easier to notice?
A bright, uniform background provides strong illumination with very little visual detail. Against that clean field, shadows from vitreous floaters have more contrast. Blue light also makes the retinal blood-flow effect behind blue-field dots easier to perceive.
This is why the same person might barely notice anything indoors, then see movement as soon as they step outside and look across a bright sky. The effect may feel dramatic even though the background—not necessarily the underlying condition—has changed.

Can dark polarised sunglasses help?
Sunglasses cannot remove blue-field dots, clear the vitreous or cure eye floaters. They can, however, change the brightness and glare of the scene you are looking at. Some people find that a darker outdoor view makes established floaters feel less distracting against the sky, although individual experience varies.

When moving dots need urgent eye care
Seek urgent assessment for a sudden visual change
Contact an eye-care professional or emergency eye service promptly if you experience:
- a sudden shower or large increase in new floaters;
- flashes of light, especially with new floaters;
- a dark curtain, veil or shadow across your vision;
- sudden blurring, loss or distortion of vision; or
- new symptoms following an eye injury or eye surgery.
The National Eye Institute warns that a sudden increase in floaters, flashes, or a curtain-like shadow can be symptoms of retinal detachment. Retinal detachment can threaten sight and needs immediate medical attention.

No. UV400 and polarisation describe different lens functions. UV400 refers to ultraviolet protection, while polarisation controls reflected glare. Look for both claims separately when those features matter to you.
Should I stare at the sun to test what I am seeing?
No. Never look directly at the sun. You do not need to do so to notice blue-field dots or floaters, and ordinary sunglasses—even very dark ones—are not safe for direct solar viewing.
